Oceania, Melanesia, Vanuatu, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. An impressive, hand-carved wood food pounder for pulverizing taro - the dominant starchy food of the region - presenting a lengthy, cylindrical form enveloped in a rich, espresso-hued patina. The tapered handle is indented on one side, allowing for easy grip, while all surfaces are silky smooth from wear. Size: 18.3" L x 1.4" Diameter (46.5 cm x 3.6 cm)
