Description
Northwestern Europe, England, Southampton, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A lovely stained-glass window with the Southampton coat of arms set in a square wood frame. The reclaimed leaded glass contains panes of green around the crest that is rendered in semi-opaque milky white and black. The coat of arms contains three roses from the houses of Lancaster and York, divided into equal parts on a central shield which is flanked by ships and rampant lions. Above is Lady Justice holding a scale and sword atop a fort, which all together represents Southampton's standing as a naval harbor and fortress town. The Duke of Lancaster and Duke of York both set out from Southampton's port for expeditions, therefore granting use of the rose emblem. The wooden frame has a modern metal suspension wire for displaying this lovely window - and this is the perfect piece for anyone with a connection to Southampton or their football club, as this emblem was used for the FC until the 1970s. Size: 26.875" L x 1" W x 25.625" H (68.3 cm x 2.5 cm x 65.1 cm)
