Description
Tom Speer (Northwest Coast Salish Peoples). "Bella Coola Ancestor Mask" serigraph, 1977. Edition 56 or 250. Signed, dated, titled, and numbered in pencil below the image. A striking limited edition serigraph of a Bella Coola (also Nuxalk or Musalkmc) ancestral mask by Pacific Northwest artist Tom Speer, an elder and Northwest Coast Salish Artist of the Duwamish Tribe. The dramatic visage presents with wide open eyes, dramatic brows, decorative markings on forehead and cheeks, a broad nose, and an open mouth. All is boldly rendered in a striking palette of royal blue, orange, black, and white hues. Mounted behind glass in a custom double matte and frame. Size (sight view): 10.9" L x 10.9" W (27.7 cm x 27.7 cm) Size (frame): 17.2" L x 17.2" W (43.7 cm x 43.7 cm)

Tom Speer is of N'Deh descent, an adopted member of historic Sackman Family (Chief Seattle and Princess Angeline descendants), and Honorary Member of the Duwamish Tribe of Indians.

According to the American Museum of Natural History, "The Nuxalk people call themselves the Nuxalkmc. A century ago, anthropologists called them the Bella Coola. Traditional Nuxalk territory is the central coast of British Columbia, from the mouth of the Bella Coola River inland along the Bella Coola Valley and nearby inlets and channels."

Provenance: private Goldstein collection, Denver, Colorado, USA. The Goldstein's have amassed their collection over the past six decades.
