Description
a Yuat River ceremonial shield, East Sepik province, Papua New Guinea.Of elaborate form, the shield with three registers of stylized faces in red/pink against a white ground, the field with swirling motifs in yellow with black. Original fiber tassels intact.Shields of this type and style are generally attributed to the Yuat River near to where it meets the Sepik and are considered to be shields used in dance and ceremony rather than traditional warfare. This example is in exceptional condition and likely dates to mid-century. Acquired by Marc Seidler at an auction in Australia, C. 1980’s. The Shield measures 61 inches tall x 16 inches wide.
