Description
A fine Asmat figural prow. Coastal Asmat, West Papua (Formerly Irian Jaya). In the form of a stylized bird, likely a hornbill, with openwork carving around it and remains of white pigment and red infill in some of the incised lines. The Asmat carve elaborate canoe prows and the present example likely represents a hornbill; a bird associated with headhunting by the Asmat. While many Asmat prows display complex multi-figural imagery, this simpler prow depicts a single powerful primary image. Acquired by Marc Seidler C. 1983. Measures 33.5 inches long x 14.5 inches tall.
