Description
Henry van de Velde, Document folder, 1903, 32.5 x 28-56 cm. Made by Heinrich Pfannstiel, Weimar, arts and crafts workshop for the production of cut, embossed and hallmarked leather work. Brown full-leather binding with book-cut ornaments, inside and flaps covered with paper. Front with stylized floral center, owner's signet RHM in a square standing on top. Another signet on the back. Marked: artist signet, signet of H. Pfannstiel, Weimar., Henry van de Velde, who had been in charge of the newly founded grand ducal arts and crafts school in Weimar since 1902 through the mediation of Harry Graf Kessler, had already designed the same portfolio in April 1903. In this, the congratulatory address of the Chamber of Crafts of the Grand Duchy of Saxony on the marriage of Grand Duke Wilhelm Ernst to Caroline von Reuss was presented. In contrast to our example, the Grand Ducal Coat of arms and the addressee are part of the decor.Cf.
