Some more info concerning the collection of Mr. and Mrs. S.

In this sale, roughly 100 of the lots presented, were part of the collection of Mr. and Mrs. S. When we got the phone call about an important international collection, the lifework of a very motivated collecting couple, it was not that simple to imagine what we would stumble upon.

The collection is a classic case of an ever-expanding horizon through the eyes and hearts of passionate collectors. Interestingly, Mr. S., an accountant, maintained a meticulous inventory, documenting the collecting journey from as early as 1967. While these first purchases were made in typical Moroccan souks in Marrakech and Essaouira, another interesting inventory note was made in 1969. It is the year in which an Indian wood carving was bought in the local ‘Innovation’, a retail chain still in business today.

In the 70s, 80s and 90s, we see the collection growing bit by bit, with new treasures acquired on buying trips to Portobello Road in London and the Parisian marchés aux puces, appearing more frequently in the collection. Occasional purchases on antiques fairs and from important dealers such as Luc Vanonkelen and Jan Dirven, where the predecessors to the bulk of the collection being formed in the early years of the 21st C.

In this sale, we are presenting a selection of Greek and Roman antiquities, early Chinese and Southeast-Asian works, European wood carvings and works of art.

Interesting lots from this collection include the magnificent Chinese turquoise- and gilt-inlaid bronze mirror from the Warring States period (lot 1073), the fine Ming gilt bronze Buddha (lot 1035), the gilt-lacquered wood Arhat (lot 1052) and the 15th C. sculpture of Pope Nicholas V (lot 1198). There is also a large group of early Khmer, Thai and Javanese sculptures.

Expect more interesting pieces from this eclectic collection in our two upcoming sales this year, the exceptional sale in October and the classic sale in November. Categories which we have not yet worked through include Islamic arts and ethnic jewelry. Throughout the catalogue, you will find three double page views of the museum-like setting created by this motivated and loving couple. We are proud to be part of their journey. We are all temporary custodians of the works of art which we treasure.
