Description
"Elizabeth the Queen: The Story of Britain's New Sovereign" by Marion Crawford, illustrated with photographs, published by Prentice-Hall, New York. First American Book Club Edition 1952.
Dust jacket [some wear and a few small edge creases]; hard boards, original gray cloth with dark-blue and lettering on spine; 5.1/2" x 8.1/4"; 236 pages; many illustrations on glossy paper, very good/ near fine condition.
This story by Marion Crawford, royal governess for seventeen years portrays, more than anything else can do, the daily background of dedication and service from which the inspiration of Her Majesty's high sense of duty is drawn.
When Crawford's first book, "The Little Princesses" was first published in 1950 it caused a furor we cannot imagine today. It has been called the original "nanny diaries" because it was the first account of life with the Royals ever published. As a result of this touching intimate account of the childhood of the Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, Crawfie was demonized by the press. The Queen Mother, who had been a great friend and who had, Crawfie maintained, given her permission to write the account, never spoke to her again.
This new book, "Elizabeth the Queen," (1952) describes a "twenty-five year old girl who is Britain's new Queen as a woman of dignity, nobility, charm, and above all, simplicity. "Crawfie", for two decades devoted friend and guide to England's royal family, takes you through the imposing gates of Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace to rooms and scenes hitherto veiled from public eyes..." [from the front flap of the dust jacket].
The stories in this book are obviously written by someone who cared a great deal for the two girls, and describe often sweet stories about Princess, and later Queen, Elizabeth. There are loads of photographs in the book that show a very young Elizabeth (the book was published in 1952) and some with her new husband Phillip.
