Description
Gordon Vigil "Eagle Feather" (Native American, Nambe Tribe, 1961 to 2009) Buffalo, alabaster, ca. late 20th to 21st century CE. A striking alabaster carving of a bison, or more commonly known as a buffalo, in a lovely simplified form cleanly carved with a rounded and smooth surface. The arrow shaped tail resembles a heartline, symbolizing the breath or a lifeforce of the animal. The natural qualities of alabaster adding beautiful veining and when brightly backlit, the semi-opaque stone glows along the rear haunches. Vigil also went by the name Eagle Feather, and often signed his work simply with a feather, the left side of the haunches just above the base is inscribed "Eagle Feather Nambe Pueblo."
