Description
**First Time At Auction**
Greece, Hellenistic period, ca. 323 to 30 BCE. A dazzling gold applique featuring the repousse image of a gorgoneion - the head of a woman with hair of venomous snakes - surrounded by 3 circular borders and a trio of suspension loops. The fierce female displays a characteristically round visage with full cheeks crowned by a sinuous coiffure of tangled serpents. Known for transforming her viewers to stone by her gaze alone, gorgoneions were believed to hold apotropaic powers that could fend off evil and bad luck and thus were worn as pendants and used to adorn everything from chariots to tombs. The placement of this gorgoneion on an annular, shield-like applique may be a reference to Perseus who beheaded the gorgon Medusa and gave it to Athena who then set it on the shield of Zeus. Size: 0.9" W x 1" H (2.3 cm x 2.5 cm); gold quality: 79.66% (equivalent to over 19 karats); weight: 0.9 grams
Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
