Description
Antique fine translucent porcelain plate hand painted with multicolor butterflies and insects in a myriad of poses: a traditional Chinese "Thousand Butterflies" motif that goes back into the 18th Century Qing Dynasty.
Gilding is liberally used on the background, rim, and as decoration on the butterflies. Matte quality of gold is consistent with antique gilding methods [1]. The plate was created c. early - mid 1800s.
The plate is 8.1/4" [20.9cm] across; there are a few grains of sand and some color glaze smears on the backside. There is also a little wear and one tiny chip on the edge [see photos]. Very good condition.
[1]--- According to Gotheborg.com - A Jesuit missionary reported from the city of Jingdezhen in 1712-1722 gilding on Chinese porcelain was introduced early in the Qing Dynasty and was done by grinding leaf gold to a powder and mixing with colorless lead enamel.
