Description

A French Louis XVI style gilt bronze and white marble figural mantel clock Imported by Harris & Harrington (1896-1919), New York, circa 1900

With round enamel dial, gilt bronze surround in the form of putti atop celestial cart, on marble plinth, bun feet, the back of works marked "A.1," "H&H," "Made in France," and "1384/ 69."

(H: 23 in. W: 33 in. D: 10 1/4 in.)

Provenance

Property formerly in the collection of Christine O. Groves Burton (1893-1973), Baltimore, Maryland
Thence by descent to the present consignor.

Note

The majority of the items from this collection were acquired or ordered by Christine O. Groves (Burton) to furnish her home, built 1922, a Colonial Revival stucco mansion located at 225 Northway, Baltimore, Maryland. The house still stands.

Condition

the gilt bronze overall bright, but with some areas of mild pitting commensurate with age, and some areas of discoloration which may be indicative of selective re-gilding; the putto hovering over the clock dial with visible ring of mixed or base metal, which may be a sign of a previous repair; the left and right-most putti are loose and can be adjusted; the marble base with some minor knicks or old chips along edge, but doesn't detract from visual quality; includes pendulum and winding key; as with all mechanical objects, Freeman's does not guarantee functionality for clocks.Â
