Description
1857 Pacific Exploration RAILROAD Indians San Francisco California Fossils RARE
Beginning in 1855, the United States Congress published reports and surveys of certain railroad routes from the Mississippi River westward to the Pacific. This volume from “Reports of Explorations and Surveys” covers the routes through California, particularly those from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Note the impressive collection of illustrations – landscape views, churches, fossils and plants, Indian tribes, and geological plans.
Per Larned,
“Narrative reports of many officers on various routes, giving much information concerning the western country. The publication of the reports being chiefly in the form of original journals, kept day by day, gives them a certain accuracy that might have been lost had the writers more frequently indulged in general descriptions.
