Description
A very large, Oriental figural silver plated Wedding Box. Impressively hand crafted pumpkin shaped box with embossed ornaments and etched details all over the surface. This nicely executed item is a popular wedding gift in Buddhist countries from Khmer Cambodia all up to Japan, specially in high class wealthy families. Named traditionally as Nangua, gourd it is a symbol of prosperity, abundance, and the descendants luck. The large box separates into two tight fitting halves and made in a section design with chased and punched scales while coiled silvered wire sepals in two layers and a solid twisted stem. Several panels are adorned with an engraved or openwork foliage motif. The stem is decorated with a relief swirl design. Unmarked. Circa: the first half of the 20th century.
