Description
A 'Rover' armchair, A 'Rover' armchair, designed by Ron Arad in 1981 by One-Off, the ready-made car seat upholstered in red leather, suspended on a tubular metal frame, 69cm wide 90cm deep 77cm high Provenance: Private Collection, Nottingham. Bought directly from Ron Arad. The Ron Arad Rover chair, also known as the 'Rover Chair' is a notable piece of furniture designed by Israeli-born designer Ron Arad. Arad is recognised for his innovative and sculptural approach to design, and the Rover chair exemplifies his distinctive style and unconventional use of materials. Introduced in 1981, the Rover chair is an iconic example of Arad's design philosophy, which often challenges traditional design norms and explores the boundaries of form and function. The chair is characterised by its dynamic and fluid shape, reminiscent of a folded sheet of paper or a ribbon in motion. One of the defining features of the Rover chair is its construction. Arad used a single sheet of reinforced steel that is bent and shaped to form the seat, backrest, and armrests of the chair. This innovative approach creates a seamless and visually striking form while also providing structural strength and stability. Its sculptural shape and the use of steel challenge the conventional expectations of what a chair should look like. Buying this armchair could save up to 0.16 tonnes of CO2e compared to buying new.
