Ancient Eastern Mediterranean / Western Anatolia, Phoenicia, ca. 10th to 8th century BCE. A mold-made glazed terracotta votive figurine representing Tanit, the Phoenician goddess invoked to bring about fertility, rain in times of drought, and worshipped as a sky goddess who ruled over the celestial realm. Her visage, framed by spiralized locks of cascading hair secured with a narrow headband, displays a classic old-world style with a slender face, almond-shaped eyes, and slender lips. With long legs, wide hips, and hands held to her breasts, she is the embodiment of fertility in ancient time. Size : 4.75 in Provenance: Ex private Chicago IL collection.
