Description
Joshua Wilson - London 18th Century. Musical Moon Phase Tall Case Clock. The early tall case clock has an American carved Chippendale walnut case most likely from Pennsylvania. The dial is signed "Josh Wilson London"and numbered 338. The clock is missing the musical bells and gears as well as the second hand. The clock is in running condition. The period American Chippendale walnut case has an open arched pediment with carved rosettes at the top and leaf carving above the tombstone door. The clock is raised on ogee bracket feet, two of which have had restoration. There are some trim losses on the clock and a missing rosette at the very top. There are cracks in the case and the clock includes the weights, and pendulum. Measures 95" high x 22" wide. Joshua Wilson was apprenticed in 1688 and worked in Lombard Street and later Clements Lane until 1733. His work can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum and a longcase clock was in the Wetherfield Collection. He was obviously a maker of some repute in his day and was well connected within the horological trade; Dawson, Drover and Parkes illustrate a bracket clock retailed by him, but supplied by Daniel Quare in Early English Clocks, ACC 1982, plates 538-540. LiveAuctioneers has a limit of 10 images per item.
