French 18th or 19th Century Portrait of Lady holding Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Oil on canvas. Label on back is illegibly signed and reads "….from the collection of my great, great, great grandfather". We recently removed the painting from the very old frame. The wood frame is very light and dry from age, weighing only 2300 grams or 74 ounces. After removing the painting from the frame, we could see that many years ago the painting was laid down on what appears to be very old hand-woven linen. There is minor inpainting on the dress and a few small spots in the non-lace white material of the dress along the very bottom edge. This bottom edge area of the painting measures approximately 1/4" high x 6" long". Initially we thought there was a large repair on the painting, but after closer inspection we realize this is not the case (an error had been made - the repair was actually on a different painting). There is no large area of repair. The painting has a yellowish hue under black light. Measures 30 ¼" high x 25" wide. Frame measures 35" high x 30" wide.
