The son of Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Francesco trained as an architect and engraver alongside his father, and produced several series of engravings focusing on the representation of monuments, temples and sculptures of Antiquity. After his father's death, Francesco remained at the head of his studio in Rome. In 1789, as a result of the Revolution, Piranesi moved to Paris. He later worked for Napoleon's government, producing engravings of antique vases and statues from French and Italian collections. He collaborated with the French artist Louis-Jean Desprez on several series of colour views of Naples, Rome and Pompeii, which Piranesi marketed in his shop in Rome. Francesco Piranesi is currently represented at the National Museum of Western Art in Japan, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the J. Paul Getty, among others.
