Description
Charles Dickens (English, 1812-70). Framed Letter and Autograph, 1864. Handwritten on letterhead printed "Gads Hill Place, Higham by Rochester Kent," dated "? Wednesday Fourth May 1864," with salutation "Dear Mr. Nihols (?)" and discussing, among other things, the Spring weather. Gads Hill Place (also Gadshill Place and Gad's Hill Place), was the country home of Charles Dickens. Built in 1780 for a former Mayor of Rochester, Thomas Stephens, the Georgian rectory sits high atop a hill with views of the countryside. Dickens lived there the last fifteen years of his life, and it was the only home he ever owned. Letter: H: 7 in., W: 4.5 in. Lithograph: 7 1/4 in., W: 4 3/4 in. Frame: H: 13 in., W: 14.75 in., D: .5 in.
