A memorial lithograph of the hard-fought 17th Maine Infantry, the
Includes a complete roster, noting promotions, deaths, and woundings, as well as notable engagements through late 1863 and a short narrative of the regiment that defended the Wheatfield at Gettysburg.
The memorial lithographed is enhanced with patriotic and military motifs including flags, cannons, and drums as well as vignettes of soldiers along the outline of a coastal fort. The lower portion features a large battle vignette with cannons and an officer on horseback with his saber raised.
The 17th Maine Infantry was raised in August 1862 and assigned to the 3rd Corps in the Army of the Potomac where it saw action at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. With the break up of the 3rd Corps in March 1864, the regiment moved to the 2nd Corps with whom it remained through the rest of the war seeing action throughout Grant’s Overland Campaign in 1864-65. During its service, the regiment lost 16 officers and 354 enlisted men killed, died of wounds and disease. The 17th suffered its heaviest loss at Gettysburg losing 122 men killed, wounded, and captured.
