Description
Civil War era album likely assembled by a West Point Military Academy cadet containing eighteen carte-de-visite (CDV) photograph views that include:
A depiction of George Washington, two group views of young men (partially identified), a portrait of a woman inscribed “Jan 18 1864, Annie’s Birthday,” two West Point cadets identified as Edward Howard Ruffner (class of 1867) & Thomas Tuttle (class of 1867), and twelve views of buildings/monuments/sights located on West Point’s campus.
The portraits bear various photographer’s imprints, as shown. All twelve of the West Point campus scenes bear the imprint “Warren, Cambridgeport, Mass,” and exhibit striking clarity and strong tones. Warren, the photographer, must have traveled to take these impressive shots and left a rich photographic legacy by capturing West Point as it would appeared to Generals Grant, Lee, McClellan, Sherman, and the other multitude of high-ranking Civil War officers who attended the academy.
[Daguerreotype, Ambrotype, Tintype, CDV, Albumen, carte-de-visite, Salt print, Cabinet Card] [Civil War, Union, Confederate]
