Description
Fascinating and early mounted albumen photograph of a group of both white and Native American subjects in a rustic yet well-appointed woodland camp. There appear to be four adults and two children in the frame, including one very young Native American child reclining in a cradleboard. A man, possibly of Native origin, rests his arm on the carrier in a protective pose. Perhaps he is the child's father. Another white man poses at the opening of a large tent with his arm leaning on the canvas- to his right, a young Native girl and woman sit on a crate while wrapped in blankets. A shadowy man in a black cap sits to their right with his legs crossed.
Impressive level of detail in the photo, with clear views of their many camp tools, cooking implements, fire pit, and other luggage plainly visible. Many of these items, including the canvas tents, are stenciled. It is unclear where this photograph was taken but based on the details it appears it was made in hilly, heavily wooded terrain sometime around the 1880s. A small yet interesting detail are the heavily beaded moccasin boots worn by the seated adolescent girl, which may be indicative of the Sioux tribe. More research may uncover the specific origins of this scene, which has the look and feel of some kind of western expedition.
[Daguerreotype, Ambrotype, Tintype, CDV, Albumen, carte-de-visite, Salt print, Cabinet Card]
