Cabinet card photograph of Henry Newsome (1798-1887), dressed in fraternal garb.
“[Newsome] left the place of his nativity in 1832, and on the eleventh day of May of that year located in Janesville, with the intention of making his home here. He remained a resident here until his death-a period of fifty-five years. He was married on the 25th day of December, 1821, to Miss Winnyford (Winifred) Chavis. Fifteen children were born to this union, six of whom still are living. Henry Newsome was a man of many valuable traits of character. he commanded the respect and confidence of all who knew him. he was a devout Christian and an active worker in the Church. His life was always in keeping with his faith. Last December, he and his wife celebrated the sixty-fifth anniversary of their marriage. He passed away peacefully rejoicing in the promise of a better life beyond the tomb. His funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at half past two o'clock from St. Paul's A. M. E. Church, South street, under the auspices of the Masonic Brotherhood, Golden Rule Lodge, No.230 of which the deceased had been a member for many years.”
