Although young R. Crumb had several published works prior to Yarrowstalks #3, including some features for Harvey Kurtzman's Help! and some cartoons for a few underground newspapers, Yarrowstalks #3 was Crumb's first cover-to-cover solo publication, pre-dating ZAP #1.
Crumb was so pleased with Yarrowstalks' publisher Brian Zahn's efforts that he was inspired to create the first two issues of ZAP. He sent the original art for the first ish to Zahn, who ran off with it (luckily Crumb made photocopies of the artwork). And so, Charles Plymell and Don Donohue published ZAP #1 the following year, making comix history and launching Crumb as a hippie household name.
