Skilled ecclesiast and one-time papal candidate, Cardinal Gaspare Carpegna (1625-1714), formed this fine collection of medallions amongst a host other fine objects which made up his Museo Carpegna.
The collection included in addition to medallions and coins, a fine library, paintings and drawings, sculpture, ceramics, works in glass, precious stones, mosaics, friezes and was particularly rich in objects from classical times.
The collection was donated to the Museo Cristiano, which became part of the Musei Vaticani, after Carpegna's death.
This work details the most impressive medallions in Carpegna's collection and includes medallions of Antonius Pius, Marcus Aurelius, emperor Commodus, Antonius Caracalla, Macrino, Gordano and more.
