Description
Cecilia Stanford (American, XX-XXI). Mosaic vase, n.d. Initialed on base. A large mosaic vase by Cecilia Stanford comprised of a ceramic body covered with a myriad of glass tesserae presenting a wide array of bold colors and mesmerizing patterns punctuated by occasional ruby red glass beads as well as ceramic elements, most notably two bovine heads glazed in mottled black and brown hues emerging in high relief on opposite sides of the vessel body. The cow's visages are surrounded by a circular, halo-like arrangement of red and green polka dotted yellow tesserae, and above both are high relief diamond-shaped ceramic 'frames' - each housing a tile adorned with a floral motif. The interior of the vessel is embellished with a black dot on buttercup yellow glaze, and the rim with a mottled brown and black glaze akin to that adorning the cows. Size: 16.5" W at widest x 22.5" H (41.9 cm x 57.2 cm)
About the artist: "Cecilia Stanford has lived and worked as a studio artist in Silver City, New Mexico, for the past 20 years. Much of her work is the result of a previous career as a professional costumer, an interest in the decorative arts, and most recently, the One Armed Witch. All of these influences combine to create rich surfaces using a variety of materials and embroidery; current works are textiles and paper collage. The elaborate decoration evokes a sense of charm and nostalgia, sometimes poignantly."
Provenance: private Goldstein collection, Denver, Colorado, USA. The Goldstein's have amassed their collection over the past six decades.
