A Very Early Smith & Beck Compound Monocular Microscope, English dated from the Beck Records, 1847, signed to the foot 'Smith & Beck 6 Coleman St, LONDON, 171' the microscope stands on a 'Y' shaped base with a turned brass column supporting the main limb on a compass-type joint, with plano-concave mirror in a gimbal, wheel of stops on a dovetail, early form of geared stage with rotating slide rest, bodytube with rack and pinion focusing, screw fine focus, in fitted case with various accessories including, 1 1/4 & 2/3in objective and can engraved Smith & Beck 6 Coleman St London, A Leiberkuhn, A low power eyepiece, a medium power eyepiece, Maltwood finder & Case A set of glass pipes in a leather covered case. all in the original fitted French polished case with internal drawer below Note: this is one of the earliest microscopes engraved Smith & Beck, Beck joined with James Smith in 1847 to form the company 'Smith & Beck'
