Item Details

Description

A large carved wood and polychromed ceremonial helmet mask known locally as Bo nun amuin which literally translates as gods in the bush. Traditionally the Baule hold them in great reverence. They are danced to protect the village against threats, to discipline women, and at the funerals of former dancers and important men. Their performances are fearsome spectacles, featuring violent behavior and magical feats. This mask measures 20 x 12 inches. A metal display stand can also be included for an additional $50.00. Baule peoples, Ivory Coast, Africa. Provenance: Franco Giovanni Scanzi collection, Italy / Ivory Coast.
