Description
A carved wood and painted zoomorphic mask with unusual treatment to the horns, they are twisted and somewhat deformed. Antelope masks "karikpo" are used at the beginning of the farming season in ceremonies honouring the local founding ancestor. They are often danced opposite an ugly mask to showcase the elegance and the antelope, perhaps this is mask is of the deformed character that dances opposite Karikpo. The mask measures 20 inches tall. Ogoni peoples, Nigeria, Africa. Provenance: A Private Pennsylvania collection.
