Item Details
Description
"Jo's Boys and How They Turned Out". A Sequel to "Little Men" by Louisa M. Alcott; illustrated in color by Clara M. Burd. Life at Plumfield with Jo's Boys, published by Little, Brown and Company, Boston, 1925, copyright by Little, Brown & Company, 1925. The Beacon Hill Bookshelf. First Edition for these illustrations. The final book in the unofficial Little Women series. In it, Jo's children, now grown, are caught up in real world troubles.

Original hard boards with past down illustration (some wear & soiling, endpapers have some brown staining - see photos), original publisher's black cloth; 5.3/4" x 8.3/4"; the endpapers are stained by the old binding glue [see photo]; 316 pages, all 8 color plates on glossy paper are present, a few small stains, very good condition.

Fans of Little Women will be glad that Jo, Meg, Amy and Laurie, after an almost total absence in Little Men, are again center stage. In fact, Alcott worked in a bit of autobiographical elements as "Mrs. Jo" has now become a famous author, who writes stories for young girls, and who struggles with the trials and tribulations of celebrity-hood. She also works in some of the current elements of the times in which she wrote, as the young ladies discuss higher education and careers for women, as well as suffrage.

Clara Miller Burd (1873-1933) was an American stained glass designer and children's book and magazine cover illustrator. She was educated at Chase School and the National Academy of Design in New York. In 1898, she traveled to Paris, France to continue her art education where she became a student of Gustave-Claude-Etienne Courtois at the Academie Colarossi.

Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888) was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet best known as the author of the novel "Little Women" (1868) and its sequels "Little Men" (1871) and "Jo's Boys" (1886).
