Apuleius was a 2nd-century Roman philosopher in Numidia known for his works such as “The Golden Ass” and “Florida”. One of his best works was his book “On the God of Socrates” in which Apuleius describes the existence of deities known as daimons (beings more than human but less than gods). This treatise has become famous, not just for its philosophical ideas, but for the now famed proverb “familiarity breeds contempt”. This 1698 edition was published in Paris by Girin.
