Description
Three Retablos, oil on tin panels, 19th century: The first depicting the Virgin Mary, probably Guadalupe and housed in original tin frame in original paint - the frame measures - 6 1/4" x 8 1/4" - the frame and the painting are in very good condition; the second depicting Our Lady of Sorrows - not framed - some paint wear and surface scrapes - 7" x 10"; and the third, St. Jerome with bible and hand resting on skull - note the recumbent lion at his side - legend has it that one evening, when he was seated with the brethren to hear the sacred lessons read, a lion suddenly limped into the monastery and the other monks fled in fear but Jerome greeted him as a guest - the lion showed him his wounded foot that had been injured by thorns - Jerome and brothers dressed the wound and the animal recovered, lost its wildness and remained a pet to brothers at the monastery - the painting is dirty and faded and needs cleaning and overall fair condition - it measures 8 5/8" x 9 3/8"
