Royal Family Dutch Darning Sampler dated 1829

Item Details

Description

Extremely rare Dutch darning sampler worked by a 14 year old member of the Dutch Royal Family in 1829 with the initials I C W. More research is required to assign names, but the makers initials (I C W) are accompanied by a crown motif surrounded by four more prominent sets of initials, each accompanied with larger crown motifs (G V W), (K S W), (M P), and (M S). It seems the 14 year old maker was a crowned member of the royal family in 1824. Smaller sets of initials, without crowns, surround all the crowned initials; they are AS, CW, HIN, CVK, SM, SW, GP, IAP, SW, IW. Some family connections exists between the sampler maker and the other people being represented on this sampler. Numerous complex darning motifs are geometrically spaced around the rest of the sampler. Silk on very fine linen; 17 x 18.5 inches unframed.
