Description
Foreign.- Potter (Beatrix) Histoire de Pierre Lapin, early French edition, translated by Victorine Ballon and Julienne Profichet, 27 colour plates, title vignette and colour pictorial endpapers by the author, bookseller's small sticker on front pastedown, original green boards lettered in white and with mounted colour illustration on upper cover, original plain glassine dust-jacket, some slight creasing and fraying with minor loss to corners, slightly torn at spine, 16mo, Warne, [1920s].
***An initial French translation had been under consideration since as early as 1907, but Beatrix Potter was unhappy with the version then proposed; in 1912 three further translators were approached by Warne, and of the translations supplied Potter felt that the one by Victorine Ballon was the most suitable, noting in a letter to Harold Warne "I have written direct to Mlle B. to thank her for the amusement she has given me - and I have told her I like another 'Peter' better; by 'une Anglaise', and requiring French correction - if she guesses it is my own, very likely she might offer to look it over - Something between mine and hers would be excellent [.] It is just right - colloquial without being slangy.".
