Description
Vintage Mid Century Modern ceramic cat, money bank designed and painted by Milvia, marked on the bottom "Coop. Cer. Art./ Quadrifoglio Florence/ Hand Painted in Italy" late 1950s – early 1960s.
The cat is c.8" [20.3cm] tall; c. 6.1/4" x 3.1/2" [15.9cm x 8.9cm]; the original rubber stopper is present; no chips, no cracks, no repairs, very good/ fine condition.
Milvia's designs are easily recognizable due to the cheerful and jaunty designs. Her painting has an underglaze crayon effect. For example, the black underglaze lines marking the eyes and mouth of the cat look like drawn with a crayon.
Milvia was born in 1934, and studied ceramics at the Istituto d'Arte in Florence. She founded Quadrifoglio ["four-leafed clover"] in 1955, and remained the chief designer until around late 1950s-early 1960s. Milvia products were sold exclusively by Pietro Botto shop in Via Strozzi, Florence. The shop offered artistic china, glasses, and majolica. Milvia's career after her Quadrifoglio period is unknown.
