Description
Dimensions: Length: 15.7 cm, Width: 15.7 cm, Height: 26.7 cm
Chinese Song Dynasty Cizhou Kiln Porcelain Plum Vase. Potted into a traditional Meiping form, large, thick and tall potted, wide body on shoulder, slender neck easing to form narrow opening, with emerging slight flaring ring mouth rim, raised on round foot base, with slight concave. Cizhou kiln, known for stoneware produced in Handan (formerly Cizhou), Hebei province, in northern China, primarily during the Song (960ñ1279) dynasty. The kiln produced hard pillows, vases, bottles, and other vessels decorated with simple but marvelously assured brushwork in brown, black, or Gray on a white, cream, buff, or, occasionally, turquoise background. The pale background of the ware was achieved by applying a coating of slip (semiliquid clay) to the body of the vessel before firing. Another type of ornamentation consisted of incisions in the slip coating, which revealed the contrasting color of the body beneath. The Cizhou kiln exerted a great influence upon the kilns in Henan, Hebei, and Shanxi provinces. The underside unglazed, revealed the pale-creme ground revealed and dark greyish brown spotted firing marks and edge-cut foot rim.
