Two-sheets. Mounted on paper. Arturo Vaccari was one of the best-known men in Livorno because of his famous distillery. His three most notable liqueurs were: the Galliano (1896), named for the famous lieutenant colonel Giuseppe who died that same year in the battle of Adua, the Gianduia Chocolate Cream, and the Amaro Salus (advertised here). Vaccari cleverly used the fashionable Belle Époque aesthetic to his advantage, commissioning posters, advertising postcards, newspaper ads and collectables to promote his brand. This poster, notes that the Amaro is “proclaimed the best and healthiest bitter,” and lists its various accolades. Property of Penn State’s Palmer Museum of Art, sold to benefit the acquisitions fund.
