Good with bumped corners and slightly slanted spine. As issued without dust jacket. Whitman (1803-1878). Providence [U.S.]: George H. Whitney, 1853. Original red cloth, gilt stamped. FIRST EDITION.

A native of Providence, Rhode Island, Whitman was at one time the fiancÃ©e of Edgar Allen Poe, who wrote his second poem entitled 'To Helen' about her. While this, her first collection of poems, was published at a late date, she had already been included in Griswold's Female Poets Of America (Philadelphia: Carey and Hart, 1849).
