Inscribed and signed on front endpaper. Allen enlisted with the American Fur Company and came to Fort Benton in 1862 on the side wheeler "Spread Eagle." His recollections include the establishment of Fort Pease, his trip to the Black Hills in 1865, his account of the Custer Massacre, and his scouting and trail guide days. He scouted for General Nelson Miles along with the Yellowstone Kelly.
