44 albumen photographs, glued to both sides of 21 cardstock leaves & to the album endpapers; each with ink caption on mount below the image. Images measure approx. 17x23 cm (6¾x9"); album leaves are 24.7x29.5 cm (9¾x11¾"); two-tone cloth lettered "Photographs" in gilt.



Significant and provocative collection of original photographs of the occupation of the Philippines by American soldiers during the Spanish-American War, the resulting insurrection, and scenes in the Philippines. The historical value of the album is greatly enhanced by the detailed captions below each image. Among them:




  • "Territory near Caloocan charged by Kansans & carried Feb. 10, '99" with a few dead insurgents and a American soldiers striding by them.


  • "Insurgents vs. Spanish - Aug. 9th 1898."


  • "Dead insurgent Lt. & his orderly killed near Santa Ana, Feb. 5, '99."


  • "Good (?) insurrectors killed near Santa Ana by Washington and Idaho boys, Feb. 5th."


  • "No. 1 - Before insurgent execution by Spaniards on Luneta, Dec. '96."


  • "No. 2 - After execution of insurgents by shooting by Spaniards on the Luneta, Dec. '96."


  • "Headquarters at Caloocan immediately after capture of the town. Feb. 10, '99."


  • "Chinese chow-chow."


  • "3rd Artillery, as infantry, in trenches before Calucan preparing for an advance, Feb. 10th."

Condition
Binding worn, broken, leaves loose; images faded, some poorly mounted with resultant creasing; just good condition, but an important photographic record.
