Explore the legendary Juan Fernandez Island, famously known as Robinson Crusoe Island, with this captivating antique nautical chart. Created in 1749 by the English pirate (‘Baron’) George Anson, this copperplate engraved chart showcases the northeast side of Juan Fernandez Island, which is now ruled by Chile. The map features a compass rose, rhumb lines, and water depth markings, providing valuable navigational details. Published as part of the French edition of 'Voyage Autour de Monde' in Amsterdam, this chart is a remarkable artifact from Anson's daring around-the-world voyage, which took place from 1740 to 1744. Anson's ambitious mission was to attack Spanish territories in western South America and seize Spanish treasure galleons. The risks were immense, as capture by the Spanish would have led to charges of piracy and execution for him and his crew. Throughout his challenging journey, Anson faced numerous setbacks, losing two-thirds of his crew and three of his six ships.
