Item Details
Description
voyage. 26 leaves. It begins on March 14, 1856 on a voyage from New York toward San Francisco under the command of Captain Reynard. The ship was declared fit for its 6th voyage around Cape Horn. Captain Reynard took the Flying Cloud on down the Atlantic , it was discovered that the bowsprit was badly sprung and the ship was deemed not seaworthy. It still made it to Rio 31 days out. Off the coast of Argentina, the ship ran into heavy gales which damaged the hull, spurs and rigging, so the captain was forced to turn around and set a course back to Rio. The ship required 6 weeks of repairs, after which it embarked on a 24 day voyage to San Francisco, encountering more foul weather along the way which necessitated the installation of an additional rudder. The ship arrived in San Francisco on September 14, 1856, 82 days out from Rio with a passage of 113 sailing days from New York. Captain Reynard was credited with having made a best days 24 hour run of 402 miles. He was from New Bedford and was a whaling master. There is a partial second log with 5 leaves for the ship Sea Serpent, Jacob Whitmore master from San Francisco to Hong Kong, commencing Thursday, October 9, 1856 and ending December 10, 1856. There is another log, 16 leaves, for the ship Flyaway from Hong Kong to Chow Foo, Captain Merrell Sewell master. Then from Chow Foo to New York. It ends Friday, May 1, 185-. The back pages are exercises in fine penmanship. The logbook shows age-appropriate wear with loose boards, some fading, and some loose pages. 13" x 8".
