Description
English Finely Carved Door to a Box Pew, having two panels in a pegged molded edge frame; the top panel carved "A.D. 1656, John Byllingsley, His Seat" among rosettes; the lower panel intricately decorated with doves (representing the Holy Spirit), lunettes, a chalice marked "IHS", crossed bishop's crooks, keys, hearts, and an open book; the door may possibly have commemorated the life of John Billingsley, born c. 1601 in Astley Abbots, Shropshire, died in London in 1655; with a custom crafted carved oak stand with casters for use as a fire screen; door only: 49" x 20 1/2", with stand: 55" high, 23 1/2" x 13 1/2". Very good condition.
