War's lead single, "New Year's Day", was released in January 1983. It reached number 10 in the UK and became the group's first hit outside of Europe, while receiving extensive radio coverage in the USAOn this first 1983 War Tour the band began to play progressively larger venues, moving from clubs to halls to arenas. The LA show was U2s first headlining performance in an arena with over 12,000 on hand.Bono attempted to engage the growing audiences with theatrical, often dangerous antics, climbing scaffoldings and lighting rigs and jumping into the audience. The sight of Bono waving a white flag during performances of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" became the tour's iconic image.Sunday Bloody Sunday was halted during the drum intro, while Bono asks the audience to move back. As usual Bono climbs a balcony during The Electric Co., and he is grabbed and chased by numerous fans up there. He is still trying to make his way down to the stage as the band begins I Fall Down, and he is forced to jump twenty feet to the floor to escape the chasing fans. The people on the floor try to grab him, and a fight nearly breaks out as he pushes past a man in his rush to return to the stage. Dennis Sheehan comes to his aid and pulls him back up, though both of their clothing is torn. After the concert Bono is lambasted by the band and tour crew for continuing his climbing antics after multiple warnings.
