Native American, United States, Alaska, Yup'ik, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A pair of dancing fans made from carved wood maskettes, feathers, and hair tassels. These are handheld dancing implements known as "tegumiak", that are carried while dancing to accentuate the movements and help illustrate the story or song being performed. The soft feathers and hair ensure that the dancer does not accidentally slice through the thin veil between realms during these rituals, the fingers grip the loops to prevent any open hand movements. The dances often honor the spirits of the animals hunted by the Yup'ik. These come in a modern wood and glass display case. Size of fan: 9" L x 15" W (22.9 cm x 38.1 cm); case: 29.5" L x 23.5" W (74.9 cm x 59.7 cm)
