Plot: Starring a greedy, stupid, superficial, vain, contemptible Mexican peasant (Toshiro Mifune) whose burning ambition is to be chosen the "mayordomo,"the head man, of the annual festival of the village in which he lives. He treats his poor wife with sheer brutality, intimidates his kids, bullies the local harlot and toadies shamelessly to the village men. He finally sells his illegitimate grandchild to the rich landowner whose son is father to the child, and then uses the money to buy the privilege of being the "mayordomo" and thus commanding respect.
