Description
TABLE. Mid 19th century. Octagonal hinged tilt top depicts a Russian wedding scene. The guests gather at the table for a presentation of a swan held high on a tray. The swan represents good luck and a lasting marriage. The scene features elaborate gilt costumes and tableware, typical of wealthy families. Painting is after a work by Makovsky and has fine craquelure and appears to be unsigned. The molded edge has gilt decorative edge. Interesting blocked and shaped post ending in four shaped curving legs ending in pad feet. Black paint with gilt decoration. Underneath top, below locking mechanism, is a Russian stamp with five round emblems and Russian words. SIZE: 31" h x 19 1/4" dia. CONDITION: Very good. (05-396/TG). $2,000-3,000.
