Early Publication Announces Discovery of the Venus de Milo
Clarac, Comte de. Sur La Statue Antique De Vénus Victrix Découverte Dans L'Ile de Milo en 1820; Transportée a Paris et Donnée Au Roi Par M. Le Marquis De Riviere, Ambassadeur de France a La Cour Ottomane (Paris: P. Didot. L'Ainé, 1821), quarto (10-1/2 in.), leather spine with small bands and having "CLARAC / VÉNUS / DE MILO" in gilt; an engraving of the statue is placed after the title page and is followed by a folding plate with engravings of comparable statues from European Museums and coinage relating to Milos and Aphrodite. A 56 pp. essay on the Venus de Milo's discovery and archaeological importance follows. Additional essays on classical art and archaeology complete the text.
Included is a tag for Christie's Lot 790/74 dated 04 OCT 1990.

Condition
1-1/4 in. split to the left edge of the plate showing Venus; binding remains tight; some light foxing the boards with light shelf wear to the extremities. Overall very good condition.
