Native American, Southwestern United States, Four Corners region, Dine (Navajo), ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-woven sheep wool throw rug in a stepped diamond pattern, in muted hues of tan, coral, beige, gray and black. Attached is a paper tag with "OB Enterprises" and the artist name "Alice Smiley." In Dine weaving tradition the deity, Spider Woman, taught the ancestral people to weave using a fantastical loom and materials made from the earth, lightning, and sky. Cotton was their main material for hundreds of years before the Spaniards' introduction of sheep. Size: 49" L x 25" W (124.5 cm x 63.5 cm)
